MBCA elected their new President Ms. Tara Flynn, Paul Flynn Construction

The Master Builders’ and Contractors’ Association (MBCA) is the representative Association for firms involved in main and general building contracting. The Association promotes, and represents members’ interests to Government Departments, public and private sector clients and the construction professionals.

The Association particularly focuses on the promotion of best practice in Tendering and Contracting, Building Standards, ESG, Off-Site Construction, Digitalisation, Productivity, Safety, Health and Welfare, Education and Training. The members of the MBCA elected their new President Ms. Tara Flynn, Paul Flynn Construction in a handover ceremony at their AGM meeting held on the 13th of November 2024 and takes over from Paul Bruton, Bennett the outgoing President.

Tara Flynn said, “I am honoured to take on the role again of President of the MBCA. I look forward to working closely with the MBCA Council and members to advance our interests in the areas of Procurement, Contracting, Infrastructure Delivery, Diversity, Safety, ESG, Education and Training and in particular the promotion and growth of our SME sector.”

MBCA Charity Donation to the Laura Lynn Foundation

The 2023 MBCA Presidential charity donation was made to the Laura Lynn Foundation, in recognition for the outstanding work that the Laura Lynn foundation do for vulnerable children. Tara Flynn, 2022 MBCA President and Paul Sheridan, MBCA General Secretary and CIF Director for Main Contracting are seen here making the important donation.

Tara explains that “the MBCA are delighted to support the important work that the foundation does to help young children who face life affecting challenges and we hope this modest contribution will go some way to alleviating some of their suffering”.

Tara Flynn Completes Term as President of the Master Builders’ and Contractors’ Association

Galway businesswoman, Tara Flynn, this week completed her year-long term as President of the Master Builders’ and Contractors’ Association, a constituent body of the Construction Industry Federation.

The Director at Paul Flynn Construction, based in Ballinasloe, assumed leadership of this national association a year ago, which represents firms involved in main and general building contracting. She is the second only woman to have held this position.

During her tenure, Tara was actively involved in the Construction Industry Federation’s Careers Campaign, which aims to position the industry as a career destination for young people and women.

Speaking as she rounded out her presidency this week, Tara Flynn said:

“Without diversity, construction will never truly modernise. Even though our industry is still somewhat recognised as ‘jobs for men’, our competence, integrity, and poise are winning the respect we deserve. However, we need to take a collaborative approach and combine our strengths to change this perception.

“A diverse workforce makes us more efficient, makes us think differently and in turn we can achieve more. I think we are well and truly breaking down the barriers of prejudice and tradition, while realising our full potential as industry leaders.”

In a concurrent role, Tara is the first female Construction Industry Federation Galway Branch Chairperson, a position she has held for the past four years. As branch chairperson, she has spearheaded a number of fundraising campaigns for charities. Beneficiaries of her many campaigns at Galway and national level include Women’s Aid, St. Joseph’s Special School, Jack & Jill Foundation, and LauraLynn Children’s’ Hospice, amongst others.

Paul Sheridan, CIF Director of Main Contracting, and Master Builders’ & Contractors’ Association Secretary, said: “The members of the Master Builders’ & Contractors’ Association would like to sincerely thank Ms. Flynn for her tremendous work and dedication in representing their strategic interests. While the year of her presidency was another challenging one for the industry, she worked tirelessly to strengthen the community fabric of the association, to ensure that the voice of the Master Builders’ and Contractors’ Association was heard at the highest levels of policy making”.

MBCA chief Tara Flynn on inspiring the next generation and building on a legacy

When Tara Flynn’s parents started a family building business in the 1970s, you could say it set her on a predestined path in the industry. Though her successful place today as one of its leading voices is likely down more to her hard work and determination in what is typically a male-dominated arena.

The Roscommon woman has recently been sworn in as the new President – and second female to take the top leadership role – of The Master Builders’ and Contractors’ Association (MBCA). “Being nominated to be the President for the MBCA, it’s huge,” she says. “The first thing that stood out in my career was being the first female chair of the CIF’s Western Region. That was amazing and such a proud moment.

“A few years ago I was truly honoured to be invited onto the board as there was a lot of bigger companies sitting around that table. Now, being up there as President for the MBCA … I’m very humbled and proud.”

Born the oldest of six in the family – two girls and four boys – construction was to the fore when Flynn was growing up. Her first foray into the industry was working for her father, the late Paul Flynn Senior, in the office.

It was, she says, under his steady guidance and leadership that she fully grasped the role and was put firmly on the road to where she is today some 25 years later. “I love the job, I love construction,” she says. “It’s so much more than a hard hat and mucky boots, which is what women can perceive it to be and that’s what we are trying to change.”

Established in 1979, and with an emphasis on teamwork and togetherness, over the past 40 years Galway-based Paul Flynn Construction has grown into one of Ireland’s leading construction companies. Starting out mainly in residential, it now has a solid reputation as a management company working across commercial, retail, industrial, education and heritage projects with a vast network of sub-contractors.
